In his recent video, Deanonymizing Monero Transactions in Tor Network, popular privacy tech focused YouTuber Sam Bent mentioned the term "Monero Twitter". Now, while I have heard of the "Crypto Twitter" or "CT" countless times, I had never actually heard the phrase "Monero Twitter" in any kind of video until this one. On the surface, this is just a subset of CT but the Monero users.
Sam Bent describes the entire Monero community as, "...in general are some of my favorite people" and that "most are privacy maximalists, obviously". He says that they "come from essentially every walk of life that you could possibly imagine". He goes on to say that "we tend to behead and eat our own, especially in places like Monero Twitter, which is a really small group of people" and that Monero Twitter is like "going to DEFCON before it became ten thousand dollars and was just totally taken over by Feds".
Monerica's profile image was shown in the video when illustrating who is in Monero Twitter. Sam Bent goes on to say that "people in other crypto spaces tend to really dislike Monero people."
When I think of Monero Twitter, I think of BawdyAnarchist, Douglas Tuman, Vik Sharma, SirJaɱzAlot, Sam Bent, Schmidt and dozens of others, in no particular order.
Price talk is very rare in Monero Twitter, and the large Monero community. It is often frowned upon to mention price targets. The focus is mostly on freedom, privacy and reminding people that Monero exists in a grassroots way since there is no formal marketing department, company or exchanges to do the promotion.
I agree that it's a eclectic group of people from different walks of life, be it religious, politically far left or far right, business people or those just understanding the direction of society. It's also a lot of people who wanted what Bitcoin was supposed to be but felt let down.
It's definitely a different group than the ones who shill memecoins and believing hype is the only utility that comes from crypto. Overall, it's people more concerned about the technology than the price and what will quickly gain attention is technical feedback, ways to deanonymize or break the privacy of Monero. After all, the goal if privacy and that's a moving target, not a concrete destination.
